All the top floor lights have all gone out but the bottom floor lights and plug sockets are fine

yeah I think the bulbs I tried were a bit dodgy... I'll buy a new one and try that.

Try bulb taken out in a "Table Lamp" plugged into a socket , (not down stairs) if bulb is good ,you will need help .
Did you find trip switches =B6 , or OLD fuses?

Does your fuse box have a row of little switches on it ?, If it does then make sure they all face the same way.
If it doesn't have small switches, but the older fuse holders then you'd be best calling an Electrician.
