Product Safety Communication
MK Sentry Stock Exchange

Dear Customer,

We have identified an issue with the manufacture of a limited number of MK Sentry 100A Switch Disconnectors that could fail and overheat, presenting a potential fire risk.

We became aware of the potential issue following a warranty return and extensive internal testing on an MK Sentry Switch. We are not aware of any safety incidents with our products in the field and we have not seen an increased warranty return rate. However, as a responsible manufacturer we are issuing this Product Safety Communication.

We have been liaising with Screwfix and identified that the products on the Affected Products List , are the only products that might be affected in their business and furthermore that it only affects supplies of those products delivered to them between 1st October 2012 and 26th January 2013. As a result, Screwfix have provided us with the names and addresses of all their customers who have purchased any of the affected products between 1st October and 19th April 2013 and you are one of those customers. We assure you that your address details shall only be used for the purposes of this Product Safety Communication.

Please note that it is only certain batches of products that are affected and these batch numbers are identifiable to our trained staff. Therefore we would ask for your co operation (whether you are a homeowner or an installer), by contacting the Exchange Helpline on 0800 028 1117 which is manned between 7.30am and 8.30pm, Monday to Friday. Alternatively, visit SwitchExchange.

If you are an installer and have fitted any of these products for your customers between 1st October 2012 and 19th April 2013 in the course of your own business, you are under a legal duty to bring this letter and notice to their attention and advise them to contact the Exchange Helpline number on 0800 028 1117 which is manned between 7.30am and 8.30pm, Monday to Friday. Alternatively, visit SwitchExchange.

MK Electric will then arrange for an inspection of the unit to be carried out and for affected switches to be replaced free of charge.

All stock held and dispatched from Screwfix since 19th April has been quality checked by MK and approved for sale and use.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your co-operation.

Yours faithfully

There's been a couple of threads about this already if you search the forum. I think with this particular recall they just want info from you and it sounds like they're going to investigate and replace the faulty products themselves. They make it sound like the recall is them being proactive rather than reactive but how much is marketing and brand damage limitation I don't know. There's obviously a potentially serious problem if a manufacturer starts a recall action, the cost must be astronomical.

So why is it only screw fix products affected? How are their stocks so different from let's say Denmams?

It's not just Screwfix, MK have contacted every company they have supplied and have been given addresses of people/companies who have bought products likely to be affected during the relevant time period.

Anyone heard anything more about this - seems to have gone very quiet .... I sent in a list of customers with products from the list, then didn't hear anything more. The helpline had said they wanted to pay the the installing electrician to go back to check, but the original email from Honeywell MK seemed to suggest they'd use their own contractors.

Coincidence ... or someone's bugging my browser :-( just heard from a company that's doing this on behalf of MK - apparently they've got 40,000 switches to look at, so have had to bring in someone to manage the process on their behalf....

Only 60000 of them sold so shouldnt take to long.

They offered me 50 to check each unit And 70 if it needs changing. However you need to send them back a minor works certificate and the faulty switch.

Bugger letting a 2nd or 3rd party having my affected client list, I don't think data protection would allow this, I've just checked them all
Myself, it's only a matter of taking the cover off!

Hmmm, checking them is one thing, what if you find some need replacing, once you've checked them and identified them as a known hazard surely you've got to replace them then regardless of cost or inconvenience?? Surely there would be legal liability issues if you didn't replace them immediately once they've been identified and having been classed as dangerous and you're in full knowledge of this....

I would rather buy a replacement main switch and fit it and then worry about who's paying me after, I certainly wouldn't leave a dodgy one in service, your not allowed to give the info to them (mk) without first telling your customers and asking their permission to give out their details, whilst you're there you might as well have a look yourself, out of the 20 or so of mine none were dodgy.
