Hi

I know very little about electronics, it's never been my vocation. I know basics and that's it but I'm a bit baffled by something that happened the other day. If I sound like I'm waffling at any point then I apoligize in advance.

I went to boot up my PC. Nothing happened, which I found strange since it had been working that morning. I never leave the PC on throughout the day, always turned off and plugged into the surge protector but the switch on the power supply at the back of the PC tunred to on. I have since found there were no power cuts or surges that day in the area.
I tried my second PC which worked, then I turned it off and then it didn't work. There were also two bedside lamps in another room running from a different socket that didn't work either though pretty much everything else in the house worked.
First off, I pulled all the plugs and switched all the mains to off and reset the meter. It solved the problem with the 2 lamps but both PCs were still dead. So I tried replacing the 5 amp fuses in the power adapters that go from the surge protector to the power supply on the computer. This resulted in the first computer(the one that initially ddidn't work) blowing the power supply. But the second one worked.

The only things left on througout the day are the alarm and a digital radio, for the dogs - don't ask :)

I'm baffled as to quite what happened. Did something short? How can a computer power supply fail when not even running and surge protected? Is it something more serious like the meter itself. I have to be honest. It is an old meter, probably 25 years old maybe more but surely it shouldn't cause this.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Michael
