Discuss Bathroom extractor switch in the DIY Electrical Advice area at ElectriciansForums.net

Your fan works by having two lives.
One live is permanently on, the other is switched by the light switch.
You turn on the light, the fan starts.
When you turn off the light, the switched live to the fan is turned off, the permanent live then powers the timer.
If you get the two lives mixed up, the fan wil usually just turn on and off with the light, it will not continue after the light is switched off.
The switch you have got can only switch one live.
You have connected the other live to the earth terminals.

It made more sense now.....thank you very much.....

so if you had screwed the original switch to the back box (and had the back box been metal) it could have been a big bang!

better a big bang than an electrocuted DIYer (2nd thoughts, DIYers should be shot. :D:D:D.)

Yeso? Here? In the UK? Crikey...Brexit has been overturned!
and by the way Tel, I have been shot many times, but us pirates are made of sterner stuff, even us DIYers!

problem there is that pirates should not be shot. it just makes them angry.only solution is to hang them dancing from the nearest yardarm. :D:D:D.
