Been to a property today to look at a potential board change and ended up confused. Gas meter has stickers saying All PE do not use as earth - I sort of understand why but the documents from previous check state that the bonding for gas is in the loft. And it is but what's the point of this. And to add to the fun owner is unaware where the stopcock is.

Can't see a question there but I'd not recommend doing a board change yourself unless you have a good understanding of the regs.
test any possible extraneous conductive parts rather than rely on stickers.

Its likely saying its all polyeurithane (probably spealt that wrong) so don't use it as your main earth.... Never seen that sticker before though

since when ( as in how long ago ) did we ever consider using a gas service pipe as a main earth?
Judging by the old installs I find, about 80+ years ago. But it might not have been allowed even then. We'd need to ask someone who was installing back then. Pete would know.

I wasn’t installing back then, but I have got regs books from the era and it wasn’t allowed.
There was a requirement to connect to the ‘town’s metallic water main’ for an earth connection. But use of a pipe carrying gas, oil or other flammable substance was prohibited.

If I remember when I get home I’ll dig out the regs.

I have a very old electrical guide from way back that states has pipes should not be earthed to the electrical system.
