Not really sure what to do, I suppose I'm doing ok at the moment earning roughly 30k a year plus overtime as an approved sparky, but that just isn't enough for me, I'm ambitious and I want an AMG mercedes parked in my garage by the time I'm 35... on a serious note, I'm stuck in a rut, I'm never going to get where I want in live just being a sparky on the books. Ive contemplated going on my own but that never materialises as I see so many one man bands driving around the place I see so much competition as a normal sparky, I need to find something that is specialist, a service that not many can offer, something I can charge the earth for :) I've done a hnc in building services, but that really doesn't help unless I do the degree/masters and become charted... I think?

As you say the key is to specialise. That or work really hard.
The trouble is, as you say, you need to be doing something not many other people are doing.
If there were an easy way to 'get rich quick' everyone would be doing it, and if I knew a different, niche way to do it I wouldn't be telling everyone else how easy it was because it'd affect my business.

I have recently went down the contract management route - off the tools but 10 times the stress

I don't have the AMG Merc yet but is going well so far!

to go out on your own is difficult even with the work picking up and labour rates starting to look get better you are looking at laying out a lot of money before you see the good of it

Hi dude, careful what you wish for...

In the last year,i have been offered two positions, with different outfits, where the salary would exceed three times the above....whippy-doo-dar...but there is ALWAYS a cost...

It would involve lots of travel,to regions where language, and food, would be the least of your worries.

You would be tied and beholden,to your paymaster,in effect,"owned" by the company.

It would require making that job,a priority, and force the placing of things such as family life, friends and, possibly eventually health, lower down the list.

We should, work to live, but once a taste for big earnings is enjoyed, those two words can get swapped...

I guess,i am suggesting you should ascertain your priorities first, then use those,to guide your next move.

Also...don't ask for advice on such an important matter, from people like me...i ride a unicycle, and collect anvils for a hobby,so how much use can i be? :conehead:
