Watching tv at moment more 4pluss 1 about a bunch of the public all chipping in and building houses.Girl on there says she has a city and guilds level one which allows her to do only domestic electrics. My question is what is this qualification?

not sure mate. i know that there is an NVQ level 2, but i dont think it is worth the paper its written on. it wont be recognised by employers. the only quals an installation spark needs are, a technical cert of some description, to at least level 3, and a qualification proving practical experience, such as an NVQ, or apprenticeship papers. of course you need to be cobncversanmt with the wiring regs, and there is 2382 for that also.
as your knowledge and experince progress, you can takle additional courses such as 2391-1 inspection and testing, 2391-2 installation design, ONCor HNC in electrical engineering, abnd there is now an NVQ 4 in building services, which you can specialise in the electrical part.

Hi,

Anyone can do electrical work, you dont even need city & guilds. There are loads of sparkys out there that have been in the trade since the 1st edition came out that have no quals at all. When I did my city & guilds at college a few year ago I was told at my assesment ( to see if I would be accepted on the course ), they told me to go straight on to the level 2 course. Now, by no means am I a nerd or a member of menser but they said the level 1 was for people that didnt have any idea of the construction industry, basically, school leavers. So answer to your question, it does not qualify you to just domestic, as you dont need to be qualified anyway. Now I need to stress that IMO, all electricians should have the relevant quals and more importantly experiance before they do any electrical work alone.

City and guilds run the 6217 level one certificate in basic construction skills, it has as much to do with electrical as plumbing and plastering, there is know exams, it's all assessment, the electrical work on the qual consists of 6 small units they are a one way lighting circuit, an A1 Ring, wiring a lighting pendant, wiring a plug top, fabricating a 90 degree bend in trunking and bending steel conduit to 90 degrees, there is NO testing, then on to 6 small similar plumbing units and the same withPlastering. As you can see it would not prove Any competence in domestic in electrical work at all, the reason we do it is that it can usually be achieved in the same academic year as a level 2 electrical qual like 2330 or EAL PEO hence more money for the college off the government because the L1 is almost impossible to fail if they put the time in.If students do the conduit and trunking they get the full electricalVersion of the 6217, but they can still achivec the qual without them
