Discuss Confused by information I have been given in the Electricians Jobs area at ElectriciansForums.net

This person requires some work. They've hopefully explained their skills and qualifications and what area they're in. Otherwise, what's the bloody point?

Hi Guys, Just for clarification as I've been told so many different things, what qualifications do I need to become a fully qualified electrician?
I currently have my city and guilds level 2 qualification and I have 17th edition which I will be updating to the 18th I am also doing my level 3 at the moment.

City and guilds level 2 and level 3 then the NVQ with portfolio work based and AM2

FULLY qualified?
Your L3+18th edition as a start.
Then, Oh, about 15 years experience. A qualification in test and inspection (C&G2391 or whatever its called now) etc etc......

And a lot depends on what areas you plan to work in. For domestic, as above, you'll need to be a member of NICEIC, NAPIT, etc. You need to check their membership requirements.

Depends on your ultimate goal. There is no legal definition of electrician, fully qualified or not.

If you want a JIB grading of electrician then you will need to complete the NVQ3

The JIB has it bang on and is the only way to get on to a building site. Ignore any other information as all that is is an inferior way to be called an electrician and will never get you a ECS Electricians Card.

I remember in the old days when you had no work you would turn up on a building site ask the site agent who was running the plasterers gang etc you would then go and see him and he wouldnt ask for quals he would ask who have you worked for then come and see the quality of your work couple of days later. If it wasn't up to standard on your way

JIB Grading will require....

(Installation electrician)
LV3 core qualification.
NVQ3
AM2.

(Approved electrician)
LV3 core qualification.
NVQ3 (held for at least 2 years.)
AM2.
L3 qualification in initial verification & periodic inspection.

(Technician)
LV3 core qualification.
NVQ3
AM2.
L3 qualification in initial verification & periodic inspection.
L4 design, erection and verification ( held for at least 5 years)

I'd be interested to know why I have 2 disagrees on my post.
I though I was correct in pointing out asking relevant governing body's would give a better answer than we can.

Unless you disagree that the criteria changes a lot.

?

The scams only want peoples money. Would you agree that someone with 3 months training is an electrician? I spent 4+ years to get my grading.

I was one of those. The schemes have there own agenda and will have you on board as a 'Domestic Installer' with hardly a qualification to your name.
