Testing existing installation, notice one circuit that supplies 10 * 30 watt LED lights has a 16 amp mcb protecting it. Change the mcb to 6 amp and it instantly trips, thought maybe I'm missing more light fitting on circuit. Used my clip on ammeter and it reads 1.7 amps, all dead tests and live tests are fine. Then thought maybe a high inrush of current, changed mcb to type c and it still trips but change it back to the 16 amp mcb and it works fine. Am I missing some thing here.

Your cable size will determine the rating of the protective device, not the load connected to it. The purpose of the protective device is to protect the cable. If your cable is suitable for a 16a MCB, then leave it in.

Cheers………….Howard

The cable is 1.5 mm and in some places 1mm. Zs is 1.27 ohms. Calculated amps came to 1.3 amps and ammeter isn't that far away from that measurement. If the cable wasn't 1 mm in places I would have just left it. Thanks for your input on this guys.

Why would you change the MCB for a lower value?? As per post#5, put the 16A back unless there's a good reason not to.

If it ain't bust, don't fix it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
