Hi all I'm doing an EICR on a property and the cooker control unit is just inside the freestanding cooker space same height as existing sockets above the worktop. In new builds I never put one closer than 300mm from edge of cooker but unsure if this is a c1 ,c2 , or c3 .

I use 300mm for water splashes and down to 100mm shown as ok in the IET guide for cooktops. Certainly no sockets, accessories etc above cook tops, where they would get affected by heat and a bit hard to access if something is burning :)

I moved one like this recently, switch about 1/3 into the cooktop space. Apparently they had the kitchen rebuilt abt 10 yrs ago and shuffled appliances along. I was there to put in a cooker hood extractor and saw the cooker switch. After a chat, I ran a new cable to a new location. The old switch was clearly heat and oil/fat affected but amazingly was still working when I removed it.

So I think it's not following regs on external influences 512.2.1 (can't take the heat) and 512.2.4 (can't always be operated safely). But as there is an MCB that can provide that safety function I'd only give it a C3.

I could sort of understand an newly qualified spark uming and aring between c2 or c3 but as @Murdoch said a c1 is rediculos. Do you feel your competant to be undertaking a eicr? What qualification & insurances do you have in place?

there's nothing wrong with improving on the minimum requirements stated in BS7671.

Too right, what is permitted by the regs and a persons own perception of danger can be very different

Considering the C1 code given earlier I will qualify my statement above with "as long as that person understands the relevant standards that is actually required"

Des, I think you've quoted me from the fan thread but it's turned up on a different one ?:D

I've deleted several posts plus the post by Sparksburnout that started the bickering.

Every single post on the forum has a report button that will bring it to the attention of the staff should you feel it necessary. Please use it rather than addressing the post yourself which just creates arguments in the thread and a lot more work for the staff.

Thanks.

I think you might find that #9 started the "bickering", however it is very true.
