Hi There, data and tele cable are something I have little knowledge of, but I have a shed office job that wants cables extending to it from the existing office in the house. I expect the data cable from the modem/network box to the shed office to be about 40 meters and the telephone cable will be about 35meters. The telephone is a dedicated work line and only serves the modem and the single telephone.

My question is simple will the cable lengths be too long for everything to operate correctly, is there anything that might cause bother?

Thanks

Stuart

Not 100% on the phone cable however cat5e is good for a run of 96m as is cat6 I believe. I have installed upto 120m on occasion and when testing signal loss has been fine. 35m will be no problem

be no problem with the phone either as long as the connections are sound.

Sorry to butt in , dont know about this stuff but my m8 , who knows this computer stuff :stuart: said that max cat 5 is 15m , because thats whats sold in PC world (stop laughing) , so just a quick question, bt home hub with the network plugs at the back could I go 30 m to laptop to keep the kids happy ? looks if i can , from the replys , but HELP !

can't see any problem here. you might lose a bit of speed, that's all.

The recommended maximum length for Cat5e cable segment is 100 meters. Usually with structured cabling (fixed cable) the maximum length is 90 meters, which then allows for the wall sockets and/or patch panels and two patch cables of up to 5 meters each.
