Discuss Dimmer for electronic transformer in the DIY Electrical Advice area at ElectriciansForums.net

I've got 3 under cabinet lights which are 12v 10w each, supplied by an electronic transformer, 10-60w.

I would like to add a dimmer, and wondered if this is possible and what type would be suitable.

There are no markings on the transformer indicating whether it is dimmable or not.

Thanks in advance.

It will be the switch that need to do the dimming, there are transformers that will work with a dimmer, but not all, you will need to look at the specification of the transformer, and then there are the lamps to consider, these also need to be of the dimmable type, get any of this wrong and you will have a nightmare with flickering, buzzing, blown lamps and transformers etc.

To be fair mate, i think you are wasting both your time and money, this stuff gets used once or twice, the novelty wears off and the get left either fully on or turned off. But it is your choice.

If you retrofit a dimmer switch, you will need a 35mm deep back box, so be prepared to dig the wall out, don't try to cram the dimmer into a 25mm or worse still a 16mm, or you will have some real problems if you do.

Cheers…………..Howard

as above ^^^^. pointless excercise in a kitchen. the lights are there to see which finger you're cutting, not for mood lighting.

Thanks for the replies, left things as they are with just a normal switch.
