O

Octopus

An incompetent builder with Napit logo:

No certs
No RCD protection on a number of modified circuits
Mixing different makes of smoke alarms
Cable runs upstairs not in zones with no additional protection
No grommets in back boxes
Fused spur directly behind and above hob
Lengthy spur off ring with a number of sockets
Downlights too close to joists
Damaged underfloor heating mat - i.e. not tested during install
Controller for underfloor heating touching the skirting board...

Thats what I've noticed so far .........

par for the scams.... pile them high, sell them cheap, giz the money, attitude.

I'd seen 1 of the above before I went to Elex ......... and paid a visit to the Napit stand .........they weren't impressed with some photo's I showed them ..................but the customer has to complain........

I naively thought NAPIT were a bit more stringent on entry along with Stroma. with NICEIC/Elecsa letting pretty much anybody in.
I am very wrong!! It seems they will let anybody join and if you dont have the correct level 3 qualifications they will sell you a course Napit have lent there name to...
Come across somebody very recently who was going to pay sily money to do a couple week course to join napit, hes an excellent carpenter and kitchen fitter and only wants to move a few sockets and install lights when doing kitchens, sometimes needing new circuits for cookers or the extra lights nothing beyond that really. I have put him in the right direction now and saved him a lot of money. He has now got a NICEIC assessment in the new year. But Napit like the rest care only about the money and will if you buy there courses let anybody in.

I was told by a NAPIT assessor many years ago after a meeting over some poor work by one of their contractors that if we rejected everyone who didn't come up to scratch we would have no members.

I suppose the whole of the industry knows this far too well and it applies to all of those schemes
The only people possibly unaware of their short commings are the successful applicants

Just cos the builder had a logo doesnt mean he was a member :D

I wonder if all schemes check logo users
They have a logo police, certsure are quite quick to take people to court if they ignore the lawyers letter to stop using the logo. they will ignore dodgy and poor work as long as the cheque clears but heaven help you if you use the niceic or elecsa logos, you might end up on the niceic wall of shame! but all publicity is good publicity as they say.

Why doesn't he, sub out the electrics, plumbing, plastering, painting and do his carpentry. Everyone is a winner then? Whilst he's faffing around trying to be an electrician, he could be installing another kitchen. Horses for courses.

I did suggest this. He has in the past subbed out the electrics, but he has had issues where believe it or not he had idiot Electrical Trainee's pretending to be fully qualified causing more trouble than its worth. I used to do bits for him but hes moved down exeter now with his wife who works for the met office. so bit far for me now.
He is somebody who likes it done his exact way to his own standards and is bit of a OCD nutter... He works on his own with an apprentice.
People think nothing of paying 10 or 15k for a immaculate show home kitchen, but ask them to spend a couple hundred on electrics they think you are a crook! they cant see the wiring but can see the nice oak cupboards...

I totally understand why the customer has to complain.... prevents contractors faking claims to undermine their competitors ........ but surely we should be allowed to complain on behalf of a customer, as a professional with an educated viewpoint, and surely some customers are of a vulnerable nature and need representation.

Most customers who I inform have been ripped off don't want to complain due to embarrassment, even when I tell them it's only them that can stop others being ripped off, they don't want the hassle.

I would like to know (obvious answer ) how a approved contractor that gets removed from the role as the boss will not comply with the Q.S system of replacing Q.S. when existing retires and non-compliant with regs and making up certs can then join NAPIT?

You waste your time keep on with the bad spelling it serves no purpose to the debate and it will not get any better.
