hi

just done a board change on a old victorian house, got a couple of questions.

door bell is on a transformer and it was shared on a circuit which is one light for the cupboard where the board is, question is, is this ok to put back on the one breaker 6a, seems a bit silly to have a bell on it's own breaker. also the cable is mighty small and now to short !, when it was wired before it went to a 1 way switch first which is next to the transformer. would it be better to wire from the board in 1mm t&e an put in a fcu with 3amp fuse before the transformer and then put it in with the one light ?

thanks for all the help wth all these questions !:)

Wire it in 1mm to the transformer via a 3A swithed spur for local isolation. people will argue that you shouldnt double up on the breakers, but if you have not got the room for another 6 A breaker I dont see a problem with it in this situation. If you have got the room, stick it on its own breaker.:) hope that helps.

Yeh when I took my 2391 this came up.

It's ok to have 6" of T&E to a JB from the breaker, BUT it's not ok to double up at the breaker.

I have heard this statement many times and some swear by its validity

If there is more than one connection at a breaker it is touted as some form of bad practice or danger

A typical lighting circuit where there are 2 directions away from the breaker will often be wired with 2 radials off that same breaker,it is less cable used, the length of the run is shorter ,therefore the Zs will be lower
The breakers have generous amounts of room for multiple connections
The ring circuit has 2 connections,so the multiple connection is designed for
Most of all it presents no danger that I am aware of

Now the arguments or the reasons for the statement that "we have only one connection per breaker"

Fire away lads :)

Hi Des,

I was always taught to put one breaker per radial circuit and having seen the arguments either way agree with you.

I dont know if there is anything specific in the regs about this though?

Interesting discussion and aes reply above seems very sensible.

Best wishes

Rex

Nothing wrong with having multiple cables in the breaker. By definition it makes it one and the same circuit.

A ring final circuit needn't have only two connections at the distribution board - there can be three if running an unfused spur from the DB.
