Doing a job at the moment and the client has asked as an extra whether I can fit a second phone handset in another room from the existing. The current setup is a speaker/mike outside, door release, and handset inside to talk/open door release. Handset has 5 wires connected. Is it ok to just loop a second handset off the existing? Never get involved with door entry/alarms and suchlike so need to know before ordering an additional handset. Thanks in advance.

Might depend on the system. I'm just looking at the wiring for the fairly standard Bell systems.

In the case of a 1 zone, you've got pretty much the same hardware as you have in a 2 zone, apart from obviously another call button and another handset.

The handsets are wired in parallel on all but the I connection (at the handset) which is the call signal from the door unit.

So, I suspect the answer is in the case of Bell at least, yes, but I can't say I'm 100% sure.

Providing you use the same make and model of handset and connect cables in the same order it should be fine.

Why dont you call the manufacture? If it's a well known make they will have a technical dept and are usually very helpful. If it's not a well known make, you should have gone for a well known make!
Sorry, didn't make it clear that it is an existing system that I didn't install and nothing to do with my current job there. The client has simply asked if I can add another handset to it while I'm on site..
