Hi all, first time post on here so hope you can help. We are wiring a small bar/bistro which has a self contained flat above owned by the same bloke. However the flat is off a totally separate supply to the bistro (separate cabinet around the back) what is the score with running different supplies in the same floor space? I’m guessing a lot of this must go on in flats etc but not sure on the NIC’s take on it. Thanks, jas

I don't believe there are any rules that prohibit it, but I might be inclined to do something sensible like mark the cables you're installing with say red tape or something and leave a sticker in an obvious place stating such.

I would probably try to avoid using the same cable runs as well so as to avoid confusion. But if there was say a false ceiling going in to the bar/bistro I might be inclined to run it all in trunking above the false ceiling line to avoid the issue entirely.

And I should add... the NICs take on it is irrelevant. They do not make the rules. If they kick up a stink about it simply ask them to explain which regulations you've contravened in writing. If they can't they cannot pick holes in your work about it.

Awesome! Thanks for the quick reply SparkyChick. I was thinking of using white pvc/pvc for the flat above just as a way of distinguishing between the two premises but maybe even that is a bit over the top.

Whilst the properties are owned by the same individual it is not likely to be a problem but should ownership become separate you may have issues. Another problem maybe if an insurance company asks for an EICR on one property but there are circuits from another source passing through it.

There are thousands and thousands,of individually owned flats and apartments, which may have their own, separate, metered supplies, yet share under-floor and ceiling space, with cabling from another supply.

Where properties are metered from one, lower point, there may be dozens of supplies, all sharing voids and cavities,of some others.

I have witnessed a stalwart example of such a situation,when a good-samaritan neighbour,found most of these supplies,using his 120mm diamond hole-saw....

Would that info be recorded anywhere, or would the next spark along just wonder why there was a mix of cables, and carry on regardless.
