EICR code

Hi Guys

had to do an EICR today for a job on which the installer hadn't certified.

Everything was okay but I didn't know what code to give for the following;

the immersion was supplied via off peak supply on its own circuit but the top element was supplied via the ring main? I remember reading in the regs that it has to have its own dedicated circuit. So what code do I give it? I'm assuming a 3 as it's obviously not dangerous but an improvement recommended.

any advice appreciated

how is the immersion connected to the ring ?
via a fused spur ? then no code.

direct connection without local fusing ? then C2.

the element is 15A so I won't be able to fuse it down as a solution either. Would a double pole 20A switch be suitable?

go to electricians school, get qualified
double pole switch is needed as means of isolation. Fuse / breaker is needed to prevent FIRE. If on ring this 15A element and its cable are probably at 32A. Alternatively put 16 or 20A breaker on ring, now safe but probably will trip when they put the electric heater/toaster on at same time as immersion.

and bear in mind that, as a fixed load, overcurrent protection may be omitted. the 32A is more than adequate for short-circuit protection.

Appendix H of OSG states any water storage vessel in excess of 15 litres should be supplied by their own separate circuit, also immersion heaters should be supplied through a switched cord outlet connection unit complying with BS1363-4

So a new install not done by a sparky?

C2, best on its own circuit............ are you sure its on the ring?

I always do own circuit 16a breaker 2.5 t&e to 20a double pole switch with neon indicator

Most immersion heaters are 3kw, yes, but some are more...

Most immersion heaters are adequate on a 13a fuse spur - but i agree, a 20a DP switch is better - especially in this case, if the immersion heater is 3.5kw.

Whats the wattage OP ?

Yes the element is 3.5kW. I know that a couple of blokes on here are saying I should go to 'electrician school', it's not that I don't know what I'm doing, I'm going it alone after my apprenticeship and just using it to pick other sparks brains on a solution. I thought that was the whole idea of the forum?


So to conclude most agree it's okay on a 20A dp switch staying on the ring main, but ideally on its own circuit?
