I'm carrying out some inspection and testing this morning. I've come across something new to me. I'm a workshop they have a 3 phase DB which is ONLY supplied from a generator. The site only had a single phase supply and therefore when they need to use 3 phase equipment they simply switch on the genny to do so. Are there any precautions I need to consider before testing? All the dead tests can be carried out as normal but when it comes to the live tests im thinking there could be problems. Earthing system? High Ze readings?

My thought is to understand the design before attempting tests : how is it isolated, what interlocks are present, earthing and bonding design etc. What Reg book was it designed to, are there any previous tests or docs etc (might be a few blank looks :) )

There are no interlocks , it's a completely isolated system. No crash points with mains supply etc. Haven't seen a system like this before....

It would be worth knowing if there are any parts of the installation where the earthing for the DNO;s single phase supply, can or is linked to the earthing arrangements for the generator supplied section.
It can be surprising how these can interact.
