got a fluke 1653 with "err 1" when turned on does anyone know whether this can be rectified at a reasonable cost or is that good night vienna ???

If you download the manual for the tester, 1653 error codes are on page 16, it recommends you send it back to fluke...
I have also read that if you clean the leads this may also help, but I would try and send it back if possible...

Error 1 is a Self Test Failure usually requires either a Firmware update/reflash (cheaper) or Hardware repair, most often to the input protection circuitry (expensive). If the MFT is less than 3 years old the repair would be covered by the warranty, if you remembered to register it with Fluke.
