Rather you than me!! ...lol!! Never operated open bladed switchgear myself, seen others do it though. Thick rubber gloves, standing on rubber mats and seeing all those lovely blue arc's following those switch blades!! ...lol!!!

As others have noted, ...craftsmanship and making installations works of art was part and parcel of yesteryear engineering projects such as these, much of which was hand made one offs....

Never worn gloves while switching in my life. You should know where it’s safe to put your pinkies. The main thing is to be quick and positive.

My only mishap was getting my legs burnt while stood in front of a DC ACB. Stupid thing is I knew it was going to trip but I thought I could get the motor I was testing under control. It’s normal starting load would be 900A @ 440V. When the meter went off scale at 2000A my thoughts were “Oh sh*t”.

I`ve just done the high voltage switching awareness course and we had to wear rubber gloves to remove LV links,I wasn`t particularly happy about that even!!!

You must have balls of steel!!!

I’ve done the HV system management course a few times. Brilliant fun! Over the years it’s got more watered down as the HSE have interfered. I dread to think what you have to wear now a days for phasing out 11KV, I was just wearing a T-shirt and jeans when I was crawling about in the OCB chamber with the hot sticks.

Because I’d had more experience of HV the other lads on the course would shove me forward when any live stuff had to be done. Wasn’t to keen on replacing a blown 400A fuse on a live open frame board though.
