Hi,

About a year ago I replaced the blower switch on my 2001 Focus because it did not work on any of the 4 settings. When I removed it I noticed slight melting around the plastic housing.

The new switch has been in for only a year and as you can see from the photos there is extensive melting to the contact with the black and orange wire. What is causing this? A bad connection that is creating arching, a short or is the blower drawing too much current due to its age? Prior to me removing the switch it was working on the 0 setting!!!

Thanks

Re: For Focus 2001 Blower switch contacts melting

my blower on my 53 plate focus only works on setting 4, I think it is a problem with the ford focus, lots of people on the internet have had problems too.

It's prob the fan speed resistor that's gone, it regulates the fan speed on 1,2 & 3. Normally mounted on a duct under the dash.
only about a £10 for a generic one off ebay. You have to be a contortionist to fit it tho ;-)

as above. it's the electronic speed controller. done one on a renault. £76 from main dealer. £26 off ebay. get the right one for the focus.

Hi bud,the issue with your connector, will be the damage/poor connection to the receptacle the blower switch plugs in to.

Your new switch plug will be fine, but the original may have damage to the internal connectors (Lucar type receptacles),and it will be this that causes a high resistance, thus over-heating.

This will only be true if there is no extra load via a faulty blower motor.

The "highest speed only working" scenario is usually indicative of a faulty speed control resistor, which does not sound like the fault you have.

If in doubt, your multi-pin connector, can be removed, and terminate using correctly sized and fitted crimps.
