Hello All

I recently visited a house with a fused wired CU with a problem with the lights. Upon re-wiring the 5A fuse with a 5A fuse wire, the lights did not work. But when I wired it with a 15A fuse wire the lights worked! Upon closer inspection of the fuse I could see that there were some remnants of 15A fuse wire.

The lights should be using a 5A fuse wire, any ideas as to why the lights did not work with a 5A wire..???

For a BS 3036 fusewire to blow would mean quite a fault , on attending this sort of problem the first thing I would have done is test the circuit , I definitely wouldn't be putting in a larger fuse , most unsafe ,
Theres obviously a fault of some magnitude , I hope the oversize fuse is not still in place ,

Agree ^^^ get your clamp meter on the lighting circuit and see what current it is drawing, this will give you a basis to start from.

lol! come on guys. we all know he probably doesn't own a clamp meter let alone how to test the circuit.

Dan your probably right , I had a Electrical Trainee for a weeks experience ( on his part not mine lol ) and when I showed him my clamp meter and multi meter he nearly wet himself with excitement and confusion, you would think I had just split the atom in front of him.
the new lads are so ill equipped with meters and knowledge it is scary.

Did this not call your attention to a possible fault?

Basic I/R and continuity testing should find the fault without it being livened up ,,
To install a larger fusewire is something the average home owner would do ,,,

What exactly do you want us to do?

It seems obvious you haven't carried out any testing, so before we can help, you need to go back to basics.

If you are lucky there may be a wholesaler open near you this morning who will have a test kit for sale. Go and buy it, tell the customer you need to test the circuit and arrange a convieient time for you to go back and do it.

Thanks for the insults and advice, I knew I could rely on you..

In all fairness mate 99 percent of the answers to any posts on here boil down to what tests you did and what the results are. At the very least an I/R test should of been carried out and that would of highlighted any shorts you have.
Or is this another case of my tester was left in my mates van which is on another job being calibrated blah blah blah.
Anyhow good luck bud and hope you find the problem

Its not about that at all , as I stated this is basic fundamental electrical safety , NO body and I mean NO body should even contemplate installing a larger CPD in order to either identify or clear a fault ,,,
