Dolph Lundgren

Hi everyone,

I have been given the job of installing twelve 70w SON-I light fittings to light up an equestrian arena. The arena is in the middle of a field nowhere near an electrical supply. Therefore we are going to use a generator. The question I have is twofold. Firstly what size of generator should I use to allow for starting current of the SON lamps. Would 2 KW be sufficient?

Secondly, what about the earthing arrangement? I presume a TT arrangement would be in order, but how would I do this? The generator will also be a mobile type, that will be moved in and out of a shed. The arena is not covered.

Any help will be appreciated.

What type of generator?

A site generator is no use for a permanent installation.

As for the earthing a good earth rod needs to be driven and linked to the neutral output. This will give a TNS system.

As for the start up load, if you switch all the lamps at the same time, you’re going to pay the cost. Staggering the start up then you don’t need much more than the loading.

Come on Dolph, are you just trying to get into character.? Sherley, its for some amazingly exciting movie about electricians, that get attacked by fanatical NICEIC terrorists, who must try to destroy BS7671 before part P is exposed for what it is, a shameful scam aimed at 5 week wonders and Muslims before America and the good old US of A is destroyed...wow what a movie I just hope the commies dont get involved.

Hi Jean Claude :20::biggrinjester:

I know this is not what you have asked , but if it is going to be a standard size arena I think you may want to up rate them to at least 150w fittings , and although the Son-I fittings will give you a further reaching spread , the quality of light will be useless for any form of serious dressage work .
You may want to suggest metal halides , or at least make sure your client understands that the light will be the colour it is !?

I doubt if any SON lighting system would meet official equestrian arena requirements either!! Most sporting events at arena's, pitch's fields etc are lit by metal halide lamps these days....

Thanks everyone. Just to let you all know that we are not allowed to use any white light (ie LED or Metal Halide) due to planning restrictions. The local authority specified 70w SON. Bizarre I know, but true. And it's not a proper arena, more of a horse type playpen for rich kids to run about.

Cheers guys.........
