Hello, my name is Tim, I am looking to become an domestic installer doing a fast track course mainly for doing bits in my own home and helping out family and friends.
I do eventually want to become a REAL electrician studing level 2&3 then nvq. All the best to everyone out there and thanks for the advice in advance

If you intend on becoming an electrician via the recognised NVQ route, then skip the fast track course. It will cost you plenty of money and not cover anything in terms of training that the proper route would not.

Thank you for the advice I will bear it in mind. I am not dismissing your advice, I am 38 and need to train around work shift pattern and some places do training of weekends. I have contacted a couple of colleges and they don't offer weekends.

I understand the difficulties of retraining whilst working full time. It may be that you can get the NVQ course delivered in a flexible format though. I would look at those options, from reputable companies with traceable feedback. Please ask on this forum should you choose this route as there are those who may be able to vouch for specific training companies.
The domestic installer route will leave you poorly or even barely trained in comparison, not a serious prospect to potential employers, lacking the years of experience needed to work for yourself, and in the worst case scenario having to start again at square one but thousands of pounds out of pocket.

Hi Tim

A few years back I was in the same position as you, check out the below link and look to do the 2365 L2 & L3, you can do a lot by distance learning at your own pace with the occasional study day and exams etc. As long as you have a few days leave you can commit to doing the practical stuff this will be your best route, and far cheaper in the long run, and they are a very good outfit.

Thank you for the replies. I have contacted Thompson training and also Able skills, as they can accommodate weekend learning

Hi I was looking at doing to start off with the 2365,2382and 2377 thanks in advance

I think you will have you hands full with the 2365 L2 & L3, I would consider the 2382 towards the end of the 2365 L3. I am not a subscriber to the do it all in five minutes approach, there is a massive amount to take in if you want to actually understand it and be able to put into practice what you have learned. PAT testing?
