Hello all,

I am buying an old house in Kent (medway) and am looking to completely rewire the house. I am currently working as a trainee electrician and am on level 3 C&G. I am going to rewire the house myself as i know I can do this, but am unsure what to do when it comes to terminating it at the C.U. as i have never done this before. Would a fully qualified electrician be willing to terminate the circuits at the C.U then test it?
Any help would be great thanks.
Matt

You'll need to get somebody on board to oversee and check your work along the way in order for them to see your 1st fix from inception to commission. Is there someone where you work that could mentor you through your decisions?
The CU terminations, I advise to get yourself a couple of cheap plastic boards and a handful of different sizes and types of cable and Earth conductors and wire a board so that you get practice at terminating and entries and what is involved. The wires don't always have to go anywhere or they could go to an accessory for you to practice testing.
Practice makes very perfect - and lots of confidence

cant the company your working for/doing your training help you out with this bit? An electrician could connect the board but still cant take responsibility for the rewire as the EIC will state what work he carried out.

Whenever a board is being changed by your mentor keep an eye out on what he's doing, ask questions.
They'll fairly straight forward once you've seen it being done and done a couple.
The tricky bits getting it looking spot on with the nice sweeping cables

By no means the perfect example however I'm quite proud of it

Earth to the earth bar, neutral to the neural bar. If it's a dual rcd be sure to terminate the same cable to the same side of the board.

Get yourself a cheap board as rpa said and give it a mock test with off cuts of cable.

Another tip:
When connecting up have say, upstairs sockets on one side and downstairs sockets on the other side so should a fault happen total loss of power to the house will be less likely to happen.
Best of luck

i'd go with the same BG board as doody's last post. <£60 inc. vat from screwfux. ( or a 10 way if you need a bigger one.

I think I would of been cropping that picture before I posted it!

At least we put it after the meter! :p
Bit of flex, rcd double socket on a surface mount. Jobs a gud un.

That's a horrendous bodge, I always use a bit of 2.5 flex to my temp RCD socket. :D

And the board you did is a nice job mate, far better than most I see. My only advice would don't write on the MCBs as it doesn't look very pro. :)

I tend to use the lid off the cardboard box and label up what circuits where. Gives me an idea of how to split the circuits say upstairs sockets on the left, downstairs in the right and keep track of the size I'll need to keep them in size order. My boss told me to write on the CBs to keep track before labelling.

Thanks for the lovely compliment. Least someone took the hint ;)

No worries, I jot my circuits and order down in my notebook generally.
I do carry some A4 notepads however in my car so they usually stay there lol,
All gets jotted down in order whilst testing in my bosses notepad.

I love putting in fuseboards. Nice cosy little cupboards with all my tools next to me cuppa (making sure the kettles been boiled before I disconnect of course! Not an amateur)
