Does anyone know how to clean polished louvres and opal/polycarbonate diffusers? I know some detergents can wreck polished louvres so you have to be careful.

I own a commercial kitchen and use this for everything:

Cif | Power Cream Kitchen

It's fine on the clear diffuser on a flourescent we have. I don't think the latest version of this cleaner damages anything, but it still works very well.
The new version is a clear liquid in a yellow bottle the old one was a yellow liquid in a clear bottle, this tended to damage gloss paint.
I think it more important what you use to wipe it with, as in, you wouldn't use a scouring pad to clean something polished. Wait Untill anything hot has cooled down before cleaning (aluminium sort he's very easily when warm for example).
Glass cleaner is also very good, I use Tesco's own brand (green liquid), it's the bst I've found. It's a very good light cleaner and may be perfect for you as it won't leave streaks.

You could try sugar soap, it's a bit alkaline but it should be fine, maybe just try a small test area first though. It's cheap and should be easily available from most hardware stores.
