IMG_1186.JPG Changed a faulty rheostat on a machine the other day, on a 1930's/40's intertype, containing a mercury switch. There are actually two of them, the larger one controlling a heating pot for the molten lead and the this faulty one for the 'mouth' to keep small feeder holes hot to the letter mags. I managed to get a used replacement from a printing trade engineer. Note the really flimsy hr cores..to allow mercury switch operation without interference.IMG_1182.JPG

when things were engineered, not just thrown together.

mercury can be safely broken down but doing so creates a nasty byproduct called mercury fulminate and the police dont take to kindly to people having that stuff.
