Maybe just a funny picture to you young man, but to those of us old enough to know better it's the first step down a slippery slope.

Aside from the fact that that's no way to run a business, it's an attitude that no employer wants to have anything to do with, believe you me.

Sure it's just a funny picture now, but what next? Cutting corners, producing shoddy work, failing to turn up to work at all...
Before you know it you'll be out of work, homeless, destitute and selling your bum on the streets.
Is that what you want? Because that's what'll happen.
I'm not that young myself Adam! And just to let you know, I work for myself and have done for a long time. I always answer the phone and try to help my customers out when I can. As a one man business it's impossible to cover all call outs but I would never ignore them for the sake of it. The OP merely posted a funny picture which amused me!

In a previous life, I often got call outs at all hours. Took phone calls on my days off to talk over jobs, even took them when on holiday, for no extra pay.

Now days, nobody rings me at 10pm at night :( Got a text message at midnight once, read it the following morning. 'How much to come and turn my electrics back on?'. Rung the caller back, went to answerphone. Customer 1 me 0.

So you can shove yer call outs.

Rung the caller back, went to answerphone.

well it would do. no electrics, can't charge the phone..

I'm ok with callouts, but only if I'm being paid. This business of just adding it to the day job (as they did) is for the birds. Bought the t shirt etc :) .

I always answer the phone
I had a call out last week and I don't like call outs - I prefer to work during the week only
If I really don't want a call out I will charge £70 for the first hour PLUS £70 for the call out
My calls are recorded an I take the payment over the phone (I do not record the payment details due to PCI compliance rules, but I record them agreeing to the call out, acknowledging the call is an emergency and them waiving the right to a 14 day cooling off period)

Saying that I do always try and help over the phone at no cost before I go out.

Learned the hard way- 90% of out of hours call cancel when they find the item plugged in (despite them assuring on the phone that they have unplugged everything) when you are on the way.
