HSS Drills any one know good quality make

I am about 3/4 the way through a trailer build all stick welded, and now I am attaching lash points etc I bought a well known diy brand but got 2 x 8mm holes and its knackered I know I can be a bit heavy handed at times but come on 2 holes, so I am looking for what my Granddad used to call blacksmith standard they were bloody dear back in the day so heaven knows what they will be now but advice is welcome

I would suggest that you consider investing in a 13-piece DeWalt DT7920B Extreme Drill Bit Set. I bought a set 18 months ago and have been well-pleased with their performance.

I have a grinder but I have never mastered the art of sharpening bits

Can get a stand which will hold drill bits at the correct angle for sharpening them on bench grinders.
May have to change wheels.
I would go for Dormer, Goliath or SnapOn for HSS bits.

I agree with using Dormer drill bits and use cutting compound and they will really last.

We get Somta drill bits locally, also FEW (French Engineering Works), they're not the cheapest but they're both very good but I'm not sure if either brand are available in the UK.

Don’t buy from UK Drills, they are terrible.

I used to own a machine shop, 8% cobalt are good, if you are only drilling shallow holes then use stubs drills.

I used to buy from ‘CNCPOORBOY’ on eBay, I’ve bought an M5 spiral point tap just a hour ago. Look for cobalt stub drills.
And use a good tapping/cutting compound to extend the life of the drill bit.

Carbide is too brittle for a hand drill, it won’t last and side movement. Even dropping them will shatter them!

I can also recommend these. Last ages.

However, if you're drilling a hole through anything less than 1.5mm steel with anything larger than 6mm in the set. They bite that hard going through that it'll deform the metal and try to take your wrist with it.

The problem with dewalt ones is that if you drill a hole and you then need to make it larger, you can’t.

Could you explain further please, I really don't get that?

That would only happen with badly re-sharpened bits which don't have a relief clearance angle. They come from the factory with that, surely?
