Installing equipment in meter cupboard

Hi folks, external meter cupboard, thinking about installing Henley block, isolator and RCD to an outbuilding in it. The backboard has printed on it: Property of [elec co] nothing to be added" etc. Are there any rules about this? Can I add provided it's done properly? I want the elec co to install a DNO main isolator anyway, when I order this should I declare what my plans are so it can be fitted to suit my needs? Do folks install irrespective of the rules? Any guidance much appreciated. Many thanks, SW

I think the answer is definately NO on this one. The dno get pretty snotty about installations within their enclosures
By all means run it by them but almost certainly the response will be a negative one.

I think there are times when you just have to make a judgement call. This isn't really an electrical issue, just a politics one. I've had to do exactly what you've described before, there really wasn't a sensible alternative. At the end of the day, they are incredibly unlikely to withdraw their services and some linesman might tut a bit when he comes out, but as long as the job is done properly then they can't really grumble. Afterall, how many internal mounted boards have stuff all over them now?? The meters aren't owned by the DNO's anymore (technically), but where are they put......??

What I have done in the past is if there is room next to the meter box is fit something like this for my equipment

If you can piggy back it next to the meter box it makes life easy for access.

Recently I had to get EDF heavily involved in a meter/ CU move.

This was inside the house BUT they said they needed a back board 35cm x 30cm to accomodate the new meter. I duely fitted a larger board and mounted my isolation switch outside the boundaries dictated by EDF/UK Power Networks.

I can't why the meter cupboard is for the exclusive use of the DNO, especially now as meters are getting smaller!

Thanks Murdoch, so if there was enough space for the cutout plus 35x30 plus feeds and tails then hopefully there wouldn't be too many complaints.
