Discuss IR TESTING - advantage of connecting L and N? in the Periodic Inspection Reporting & Certification area at ElectriciansForums.net

GN3 states that it acceptable to connect L and N together and IR to earth in a situation where all wires cannot be disconnected from accessories i.e a row of fluo's

But what is the advantage of doing this rather than just individually IR testing between first L and earth then between N and earth?

The advantages would be that you only conduct the test once, and that sensitive equipment with functional earths will not have 500v passed through their circuitry.

I understand that they will be at the same potential but why not just individually test l to e and then e to n?

only takes seconds to test would take you longer to connect l and n together

and suppose that a socket, feeding a computer has N/E reversal. you would then be putting possibly 500v dc across it's psu. of course, you should have found this problem before IR test but........ and here's another advantage. joining Land N is a damn sight cheaper fuse finder than them newfangled expensive gadgets. LOL.
