Hi All, I've been asked by a friend of mine if they require a fire alarm system within a building they have just purchased.

It is a building with 9 flats within across 4 floors, and was wondering what regulation they need to comply with and if they need a fire alarm system installed or not.

he has been advised mains smokes are ok but i have told him this isn't correct as it is the communal area & may require emergency lights etc and i believe a system is required but am not 100% sure here.

Am i wrong?

A lot will depend on the building construction and escape routes, routes which should be protected to prevent the spread of smoke and fire. The dwellings should form individual fire compartments with suitable Part 6 systems. Tell him to pay a competent person to give a fire risk assessment, this assessment may not give advice on the scope of fire alarm if required, this may require another parties involvement.

Thank you so much for that response, very helpful and informative :)
