I'm a 17th ed. qualified part-timer, I work in a college during the week and take on electrical work for friends and such - I am therefore aware that this does not put me on a par for the knowledge of lots of you who use this site. I'm also aware that I may not use the right terms so I'll do my best but please feel free to correct me.

I've been called to a job of someone who's inherited a part reonovated house in Essex. When I was there, the wiring didn't add up (things were live that shouldn't be etc) and I've traced it back to the fact that the previous owner (who's now dead) jumped the supply by fixing a 10mm armoured cable into the incoming cable and dragging it into the loft. In the loft the cable is connected to a mains fuse and then comes out in 8mm earth cable (so basically the earth is live).

He's sealed it under the floor on the incoming supply and it looks very nice (a reasonably professional job).

The new owner is terrified that the electric board will take her to court and fine her if she reports it and want me to put it right.

I don't think this is the case and have advise her to simply phone up and say she's just noticed it. After all she didn't jump it in the first place.

So two questions:-

1) What happens if she involves the electricity board?
2) How would I go about putting something like this right? I was thinking of cutting it back close to where it's been jumped and sealing it with heat seal, but I've only every worked on small scale domestic work and worry about getting the connections on properly.

Any not too abusive posts would really help me out.

Thanks
Matt

call the dno and explain, you could do it on the customers behalf i recon.

when they come out remove the jumped cable and if you did want to liven that cable up again could do it via henley blocks after the meter

get them to fit an isolator while there their or better yet install one and get them to put the tails into it so it can be sealed

remove the jumped cablethe OP should not touch this. it's LIVE and also DNO property. let DNO sort it.

Contact the DNO on behalf of your client, you know what you're talking about more than Joe Bloggs so can explain better + you'll get brownie points for not just leaving the customer in the lurch. But i do agree with tel, don't touch it. Contact the DNO.

ill be honest i only re-read what i put after latest post.

i meant to say when they come out and remove.

sometimes my mind plays tricks on me and i think ive done something when i havent

Not Guilty Your Honour
OK. let you off with a suspended sentence. ( hope the rope doesn't snap). :21:

If they have only recently own this place then all should be ok to get them to remove it

Understand the worry, with truck drivers bring in non eu persons, if they report it they are fined, so if they find any people just shut up and let them go.
