Having a conversation with a work mate today, who is thinking of having a new kitchen fitted.
This would mean him having to move some sockets and extending the ring in the kitchen to add a copule more (currently has 2 doubles and a single), from what i can gather he still has a old wylex 4 way with rewirable fuses.
Obviously this is not up to date with current regs, so if he was to have the kitchen refitted i presume that he would need a CU change.
Obviously anything he would want doing in there would be notifiable and would need RCD protection with the exception of the freezer.
If for example, he got in B&Q or someone like that what route would they take. Would they refuse to touch it ? Do they recommend that he would need a board change?
I was just trying to open his eyes up to expect a much higher bill and more work than he has currently in mind.

Well yes the sockets would have to be RCD protected so he will have to eitheR have a new board or an added CU protecting the kitchen sockets he had installed.

I work for a kitchen fitter on and off, The Orange shed will charge him top whack, Then pass the job onto the kitchen fitter(subby) Who will sub this out, I seen the sheet of what they pay him £114 to supply and fit ringmain, and the orange shed allows £40 for certs :D
The orange shed will charge him the earth and want the CCU changing and all bonding/Tails etc etc.
I think the rule of thumb for the fitters are you get about 35% of what they charge the customer :D

if your doing the work for him make sure you cover your own ---. Yes his cu is out of date with the regs but if he wont update it then i suggest putn the kitchen circuits on a cu of its own...

Thanks guys, all pretty much confirmed what i had said to him today. Bar the info about the orange shed from mattmoo.
He just came in today saying his hob had played up over the weekend and he needs a new oven so while he is at it he will get a new kitchen... then he asked me about moving, adding sockets etc so i asked him about his CU and then told him it wouldnt be as easy as he thinks.
He has also in the past told me that there are 2 light switches that dont work and one socket that went bang and now doesnt work. I told him before he gets his kitchen done he should get a spark in as i reckon he could do with a rewire and you dont want to discover that after a nice shiny new "expensive" kitchen has gone in or is in the process of going in.
Not even as if i can pop round there as he lives about 50 miles from me.
