Need to change my ruptured lighting fuse, no 6A fusewire available, am I OK to use 32A provided I leave a fire extinguisher by the fuseboad.

no. You'd be safer paying for a sparky to come out today and just do a CU change. I'd recommend going for rcbo's too

I generally find a 6mm bolt is easier to fit.

You lads don't half mess about just get the lighting conductor and slot it straight in to the bullet, no need to worry about nuisance tripping then.

hi all,
5A or 6A it's all meaningless as it will blow when it feels like it (with the exception of a short circuit fault). Table 53.1 still gives the sizes of tinned copper wire that should be used for semi enclosed fuses. A 5A rating needs a wire with a diameter of 0.2mm, which just happens to be the same size as ONE strand of common flex used for pendant drops etc (BS6500). True, it might not be tinned, but it will get you out of a tight spot, and still be on the safe side (if you can have such a thing with rewireables). I do not suggest that this is doubled up for 10A, as I have other work rounds for higher values, still using a single strand.
I once went on a job where a farmer had decided to use a nail to replace a BS88 cartridge - The fire brigade was already there, and when we opened up the switch fuse, his face was as red as the flames coming out the barn! Idiots are born every minute....
