Hi Folks first post on here so I hope someone can help.
So I purchase a briquette press from Latvia on Ebay for a few £K.
Yea, yea, I know right.
Despite this the press works well for a day and a half then with me stood in front of the press watching it the main MCB to the entire bungalow trips.
I've changed the extension lead and the adapter (it come with a EU plug)
I've tried different rings (from the same distribution board) but the trip goes all the time.
So I'm on to the seller who puts me on to the manufacturer who tells me I basically need to test my system by plugging the press into the neighbors to see what happens.
Now is it just me or does anyone else find that a stupid idea or is it a good idea. To my mind I have no idea what damage that could do to the neighbors property.
Basically do you think it's a reasonable request to make of my neighbors?
Thanks
G.

"Hi neighbour, I have this press that keeps buggering up my electrics. The manufacturer says I should use someone else's electrics to see what happens... How about it mate????" :tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy:

is it a MCB that trips or an RCD? (if it's an RCBO, you won't be ableto tell if it's overload or earth leakage though). best advice is to get a local elecrician in the test both your installation and machine. i've a sneaky feeling that you have an upfront RCD .

OK. that's a RCD. i would say that you machine has some earth leakage. only a sparks with the correct test equipment can tell, as it could be a combination of several appliances, each one being under the threshold , but added to give sufficient leakage to trip the RCD. it's also possible that the RCD itself is over sensitive.

Hi folks.
I've just had a sparks in and the RCD is fine, the press is kaput.
The manufactures are now asking me to hold the RCD on and press and hold the NVR on at the same time to see what pops.
Oh how I laughed. The press going back to Latvia.

OK, after a lot of thought I've decided to keep the press and get some help to fix it here. It's actually one of the few I can find in this country and will still be a lot cheaper then buying one in the UK even after repairs.
So here's the dilemma what sort of electrician do you ask for to repair something like this. Not a computer and a white good. A washing machine is hardly the same thing.Main house MCB/RCD tripping. DSCF4219.JPG - EletriciansForums.net
I've had a look at it and just by the process of disconnecting bits I've worked out it's not the main big motor that powers the ram.
This hopper motor has more wires then I've ever seen going into a motor before but seems to be the culprit.

I'm going to see if I can get a electrical diagram from the manufacturers tomorrow.
This motor just powers a cone that rotates and pushes sawdust over the ram filling it up.

So what the extra electrics are for I have no idea could they be some sort of safety/thermal sensors/switches?
Could I disconnect them in turn and see if the machine will turn on is the big question?
Any help welcome or recommendations for someone in or near Poole in Dorset would be good.
Thanks.

There are U1, U2 and Z1, Z2 as well as a yellow in and out (no idea). If any none can tell me if it's possible to check this motor for a "dead short" using a meter that would be cool.
Thanks.

U1-U2 and Z1-Z2 are your run winding and start winding. any competent electrician can test for earth leakage on the motor and elsewhere. you won'tmanage anything with a maplin multimeter.

Thank you Telectrix.
This press is fitted with a NVR switch so the sparks I had in said he couldn't check it for earthing.
Can you not test the motor for a short by testing the resistance against the motor housing and any lead coming out the motor (if you disconnect everything)?
