What will happen to the companies that have left the trade ?

MCS has asked that all FIT Licensees send through a list of the addresses that have an incorrectly installed generation meters. The Certification Body will be expected to investigate these cases as non-conformity by the installation companies. The information found at each investigation will be fed back to each of the FIT Licensees. It is anticipated that the meters will need to be moved to an appropriate place by the MCS Installation Company at their own cost before the non-compliance is cleared.

This issue has been brought to light following discussions with Energy UK1 and the FIT Licensees. During the biennial physical meter reads carried out by the FIT Licensees, it has become apparent that a large number of generation meters have been installed in inappropriate places, such as loft spaces, which would be considered a non-conformity against the MCS installation standard MIS 3002. MCS is clear in its Metering Guidance document and reference in both MIS 3002 and the PV Guide that,
“The meter shall be fitted to a vertical surface and be placed in a position so that the register can easily be read by the customer without requiring the use of any equipment such as tools, ladders or a torch. Ideally the meter should be positioned adjacent to the consumer unit.”

MCS would like to reinforce the requirement on MCS PV installation companies that compliance with MIS 3002 and the Metering Guidance document was not optional and the requirements were developed to avoid these issues. Correspondence has been sent to the Certification Bodies and their assessors to ensure that they are checking the placement of meters.

Never fitted one in a loft, but have regularly fitted them inside consumer units. Hope that is consider to meet the requirement of being on a vertical surface!

Also of course depends what the spec said at the time of the install, not what it says now...

NEVER fitted one in a loft.

a certain well known rent a roof company has (erm allegedly) installed 40k systems with meters in the loft..... coz they get the best signal for the GSM meters up there, but that doesn't help the FIT company meter readers.

doh.

We've actually installed one in a loft before. There really was no other option though as the consumer unit was utterly inaccessible without removing a section of kitchen cupboard. The customer was in the process of converting the loft space though so I'm hoping he followed that through.

We're okay but we've just done an inspection for a housing association that estimate they have over 500 fitted in lofts.. And the company is no longer trading
