Has anyone got a list of the minutes you get for doing set tasks, for example I have a list stating one bedroom flats should be rewired in 2010 minutes, a 2 bed flat in 2640 etc.

I was just wondering if anyone had any further information on these lists. ie: how many minutes do they say it should take to install a fan, install a central heating circuit, cooker circuit and so on. It would really help me with some pricing I am doing.

Minutes??

Never heard of that before.

I have just done first fix on an unoccupied rewire of a 2 bed flat and that took me approx 30hrs.

And i wasnt rushing.

Thanks for all the replies gents, I've just had a week of hell completing this tender that has to be in for the morning hence why I haven't been back for a whilst. I was fuming with myself for a split second then when I seen so many replies to my post, I didn't expect anyone to have this information when I posted this question and when I seen the replies I thought I may have missed out.

This is an extremely large tender (multimillion £'s + worth of work), schedule of rates was only good for guide pricing on this. I do complete a lot of responsive repair work and for those contracts I use all the NHF Schedules along with those provided by companies themselves, I have also constructed our own for tendering purposes in the past however this tender was much different.

This tender involves the refurbishment of domestic properties and they wanted everything broken down for every task. Whether it was replacing a 1g switch to wiring ring mains and completing redecoration we had to price labour, class 2 materials, consumables, overheads, profit and then we had to fill in another tender for preliminaries including wash facilities, skips, tenant liaison staff, temp offices etc. It was so detailed we had to use minutes, I couldn't just put an hour down for everything as they would of laughed it off.

A lot of these big jobs (rewires etc) for the authorities are priced using minutes now, if anyone does require any information on this in future let me know as I do have information on what they allow now. I have also brought some professional people in with big business history to help me with my tender, again if anyone goes for this type of work in future or is involved with e tendering just drop me a message, professional help really does help.

There is a guide Luckins I think it's called...sets out reccomended times for 2nd fixing a socket outlet or lighting pendant for instance.

Luckins - Installation Times Guide

Thanks for this Lenny, I have never seen this before but I will be purchasing it for future reference.

I already have this mate, I find that this is far too high unless your pricing for private work. If you try to go for large contacts using Brian Spons prices you've got no chance although it does give you a guide on how to work these things out.

Spon's pricing is used by consulting engineers to provide budgets for large contracts, the luckins edition is closer to actual costs .
SEC have a estimating package called win it which will provide you with the ability to provide schedules of rates bill's of quants and track orders and deliveries.

Well I for one would like to take you up on this offer. I am looking to price such work in the near future, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Would love to hear from you Mr Gibbons either here or via email.

Many thanks

When tendering for the the sort of work he is you need to follow such guidelines. We're talking big contracts here. These guides come from time and motion studies and they have been used by professional estimators and quantity surveyors for many years. They're a good way of pricing large jobs quickly that can later be scrutinized to the nth degree. At the end of the day it doesn't really matter what method you use to price, it's all guess work, but it helps to use tools to speed things up.

That's exactly what we're talking Voltimax, this was a contract for in excess of £60 million worth of electrical work over 4 years which was to be distributed among contractors of all different sizes, the large multi nationals or the likes of myself employing 22 staff. I have to still fill in the same tender documentation as them.

I have done this on many occasions before and I know they work that way, I just wanted to apply my hourly rate to the time those people who have done the time and motions studies say I should take, it would of made things a lot quicker for me.

I did have documentation etc from sub of the subcontracting I have previously done and I also had bits myself it was just putting it all together however I got there in the end.

For the record and just to show others who have never done this type of thing before what is involved. I have been through the PPQ process, through the tendering questionnaire process and I managed to get our tender in on time. I am now through to the presentation process which involves me and other specialist members of my staff (Tenant Liaison Officer / Health & Safety Officer) standing up giving a presentation about us for 45 mins and then taking questions from approx 25 people on the floor for the next hour.

Even after all this, there is still no guarantee that we will be issued with work although I have done this lots of times in the past, we have been successfully put on lists yet not had work, on other occasions we have that's just the way things go.
