I have just achieved mcs accreditation and have been asked to install a system on a slate roof. I am aware that some installers drill the slates and use sealed bolts to fix the mounting rails, I'm not overly keen on drilling someones slate roof and was wondering weather there is an alternative solution.

Did this last week- make sure you have roof hooks suitable for slate rooves. Remove the slates where the hooks will be. Cut the slates to fit around the hooks. Flashing both under the hook down to the slate below and flashing from the batten above down to the angle of the hook so that all screws are covered. Then fit slate cut to size.

Hope that made sense - in my opinion it's a much better solution than sealed bolts, especially as the customer will hold you liable for any leak over the lifetime of the system.

I'd advise getting a roofer in and have a contract stating that they are responsible for ensuring the integrity of the roof!
