Hi

I am interested in making my own steel pendant light as a little project - not for sale.

The rose would be bare steel which I am going to lacquer. The ceiling rose strap has an earth and it is connected to the rose by side thumbscrews. I am going to remove some lacquer on the rose where the screwheads will sit for earth continuity of the rose.

The screws only have a small head so I wanted to check there is enough contact for earth continuity.

I have read online that the following requirements/test should be carried out:

"Maximum resistance 0.50
Measured by passing a minimum current of 10 A at between 6 V and 12 V for at least 1s"

I was wondering if this is something that a multimeter can do. Can you set the current on a multimeter? Sorry for the stupid questions I have never owned a multi meter. Alternatively would the built in continuity tests on the multi meter be satisfactory.

Cheers

standard multimeter may not have enough resolution in the low ohms range to measure it correctly. For proper results better use a continuity tester.

Stupid question - I have never used a multimeter or continuity tester this is just a bit of a project for fun - can you select the current on these?

Out of curiosity I rigged up my old AVO BM100 continuity/insulation tester to an ammeter, measured 0.2A on 2Ohms range.
Not surprising - they use a current of 200mA with an open circuit voltage of between 4 and 24V DC. I think some are as low as 100mA.

why not use a PAT tester. 20A on earth bond test.
