Discuss New electrician look for advice in the The Welcome Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

Hi Pete!

I currently work for a small electrical firm doing house re-wires, kitchen extensions etc, I will be looking to go fully self employed within the next year and was wandering what steps I would need to take or order to do so.

Thanks :))
Wrong person mate, get yourself access to the trainee area lots of other guy looking for answers like yours. I have been out of the loop as far as Domestic work is concerned, as I have been mainly Industrial and commercial, done a fair bit of house bashing but that was on the books, so sorry I can't offer any more advice, good luck anyway.

Thanks mate! Will try get access to the trainee area, all the best!

In the meantime Ashley, the biggest hill to climb, is ensuring you have enough regular work coming in to support your monthly envisaged salary. I came back into the industry some 4 years ago, and have just started to receive regular work through my now contacts. Do you have any inroads in that area first?

You need money in your business account .............. lots of it to cover late payment from clients.

PL & PI insurance
Part P Scheme membership - and all that entails
Decent kit and calibrated tools
Invest in certificate software
Be organised
Be positive
Don't let people down
A savings mechanisim for your tax and NI
Tell HMRC
Tell your vehicle insurance
Estimate your monthly fixed and variable overheads

I could go on!

Another one to add,
Be certain you have enough experience to stand on your own , after just 1 year?

Are you trying to put Ashley off his ambition :)

I suppose the obvious question is why does he want to go SE?

There won't be any sick pay, holiday pay, pensions ........ so be VERY careful when you do any sums.

Its NOT easy going from a salary to building a reliable income on your own .............. believe me - I've done it

Hi all,

Thanks for all the responses, give me a lot to think about. Myself going SE isn’t a matter of when it’s more of a matter of IF. I’m from Cornwall originally, but currently live in London with my Mum. The plan is to eventually move back to Cornwall and go self employed there, to be closer to my family, and to return home.

^^ good man.

There's no harm in having aspiration and planning.

As for overheads, if you allow £500 per month (excluding buying a vehicle) then you will be about right. It may seem a lot but this is what I use and I've been SE for 8 years.

If and when you go SE, do consult an accountant AND keep all receipts, irrespective of what they are for....(within reason)!

It's all in the planning! will defiantly bear the figure in mind. I have already started getting in the habit of using quick books self-employed and taking pictures any and all recites of buying things like tools. Will look into accountants nearer the time.
