Hi All,

I signed up yesterday in order to see what the consensus was about earthing arrangements for outbuildings - since I was asked for advice by a friend.
Thanks to everyone who contributed to the threads on this subject - I'm clearer about current practice in this matter now.

In case anyone wonders whether I'm qualified to give electrical advice to my friend, the answer is rather complicated:

I'm an electrical design engineer in the field of industrial automation, with 20 years of experience designing the control systems for machines.
I passed my 16th Edition 'requirements for installations' back in 2005, since I was installing and maintaining machines in the field a lot at the time, but was largely designing and building the machines (not installing them) by the time 17th Edition came out, so never got round to updating my qualification (I bought the new regs book though!).
I do have BEng, MEng, CEng MIET in an electrical discipline after my name, so I hope that the 'real' electricians out there don't feel I'm inadequately qualified to give my opinion about electrical matters...

Anyway - hi to you all, and I hope I'll be able to contribute to your community at some point along the way.

Many thanks for that. I think I read four threads on the subject (and this vintage IEE publication) before I concluded that a TT system (separate earth electrode on the outbuilding) was right for my mate's installation.

Them buggers were waaaay to energetic....
