The neon light on my flat-plate/switched fused connection unit doesn't come on when I use the washing machine. The machine still works - but does the fact that the light doesn't come on mean something is wrong? Do I need to get an electrician in?

Did the status light ever come on and off with the switch before? If so it's just the light thats gone in it and everything will still work as it should. As long as the switch still isolates the appliance, and you do not care for the status light, all is good. If you would like to have the light back, you will need to have the switched unit changed.

did it used to work before? could be just a blown neon, or 1 of the connections ( the neon is connected to the output terminals with pretty thin fragile wire).short of pulling the FCU off and checking, nothing to worry about IMHO.

Yes. There’s something wrong.... the light doesn’t work.

Probably nothing wrong at all, but it would be worth having it checked by an electrician.
If the wire to the light is loose, there may be another loose wire.

Funny things neons......never quite know what you will uncover....ha ha ha
Sorry OP follow advice above, except the bit about the hammer DO NOT hit it with a hammer

Thanks everyone (including the jokers - good thing you put in the emojis or I'd have taken you seriously). Much appreciated.
