I have been doing some work for a friend of mine and he has an old wooden indicator box with 6 flags in it for various rooms and an indicator for the main door to the house.

The relatively new bell wire that was put in by the electrician that rewired the place (not me) is all fine, I have tested it. It appears to possible be the old transformer in the wooden box that has died.

They really want to get it up and working again as a feature.

Has anyone repaired one of these before and had t replace the transformer? If so what did they use? A normal bell type transformer or a specialised one?

Thanks in advance.

Get some photos on of the transformer and any labels on it. Don't apply any voltage to the indicator unit yet. Daz

The annunciator coils are often in series with the bell, i.e. each push feeds its own coil and the bell is connected in the coil common return so that it rings whichever push is pressed. In that setup the full transformer voltage never reaches the coils as the bell limits the current. Any normal bell current will swing the indicators provided that the transformer voltage is sufficient to ring the bell.

...So with six flags,it will/may have six coils, possibly making a faulty bell the culprit?

I spent a lot of time,as a tiny child, staring at the little red star, dangling behind a small ,round aperture, waiting to be called in turn,at the families doctor's surgery.

I always thought a wizard controlled it...
