Hello professionals, I'm a DIYer and have bought some wall lights from an auction. Just realised they're made in Portugal (Paulo Coelho). They've got 3 wires; an earth sheath with copper wire, a blue sheath and a silver sheath both having silver wires (steel?) Are these compatible with the blue and brown wires coming out of my wall?

A photo will help if you can post one.

Forgetting about the earth wire (should be secure to any metallic casing of the fitting) You have 2 wires, one will be live, one will be neutral.
Is there any instructions or safety certificate with these fittings?
Are they 'off the shelf' or built by someone?
Are the lampholders suitable for British lamps?
Is it rated for 230v?
Is there a maximum wattage marked on it somewhere? (Its the heat you have to worry about)
There should still be a CE mark for safety.

Thanks for replying Littlespark. On the label it says Paulo Coelho Ref 2000, Max 40W, E14, 230V, then there are 2 symbols: a square within a square and an F within a triangle, then CE so looks like they're off the shelf. They are for screw-in bulbs, not bayonet.

Do hurry up with the picture! I have never seen Portugese lights!
Portugese Men O' War, yes...nasty, stinging bast***s!
The square within a square is nice...but the F in a triangle...does that mean don't dry-clean, or cool tumble dry?

Sorry folks, no piccy (tech dinosaur, no mobile, no smart phone) but thanks for info. So blue from wall to blue on light and brown from wall to silver on light?

the double square means that the fitting is double insulated and does not require earthing. just terminate your cpc (earth wire) into a choc block connector. if you have access to a multimeter ( any cheap one will do ) test for continuityfrom the bulb holder to each of you blue and silver wires. the centre contact is L and the outer is N, but usually with modern fittings the polarity is not critical.
