Trying to answer a question with regards a fault on an electrical shower.
The question reads: A fault has occurred on an electric shower , when the shower was turned on a crackling sound was heard coming from the shower, the lights in the room then flickered and dimmed before the shower fails and turns off.

What are the likely faults that can produce these symptoms?

I thought that it may be a loose termination causing an open circuit or even a short to earth and the surge due to either of these eventualities would temporarily cause the lowering of voltage to flow through other circuits.

Any thoughts on the subject would be gratefully appreciated cheers!

There is limited information in the question. However a crackling sound is indicative of a loose connection arcing as contact is made and lost.
The creation of a sustained arc for a short time could cause a high current to flow in the circuit which would have the effect of dropping the supply voltage to the property and causing the lights to dim.
Since the arc is taking a high current the protective device would then operate and cause the shower to stop. Alternatively the arc can have burnt out the terminal / cable so that the temporary contact can no longer be made.
