Two questions here really

Am i right in thinking that PFC is Prospective Fault Current or is it power factor corection?

Second question is why is it important to know the Prospective Fault Current?

Power factor is normally just PF, i know PFC as Prospective Fault Current.

You need to know the value of PFC on a circuit to confirm the protective device for that circuit could withstand it, without creating damage to the protective device and in turn the device not operating.
 
As said above you need to know the fault current to ensure the kit can withstand the fault.

Hv switchgear as a rule of thumb has to be able to withstand full fault current for 5seconds this gives circuit protection time to operate.
 
PFC is required to determine the size of CPC, whether the CPD will operate within the specified time, and whether the breaking capacity of the CPD is sufficient.
CPC = Circuit Protective Conductor.
CPD = Circuit Protective Device.

The abbreviation "PFC" could be used for either Prospective Fault Current (PFC) or Power Factor Correction (pfc) it depends on the context in which it's used, the normal convention as I've shown is to use capital letters for the former and lower case letters for the latter to avoid confusion.
