I cant do an RCD test

When i press the test button the rcd trips before i can get a reading ??

I hope you don't mean you are pressing the test button incorporated on the RCD.

Is it on "soft" test thats if it has that option?
is it a loop test? because an earth loop impedeance test will cause RCD to trip

could well be a "cooked" rcd - ramp test it and also check your tester on another rcd. A megger 1552 will show "TRP" if the rcd is faulty and not behaving. Have seen this when the load from the mcbs well exceeds the max cabability of the rcd.

What make testers have you got? My megger mft seems to get through them fairly quick, although have started turning them off between tests lately and this seems to help.

Ah! You are not doing what I think you are doing are you?!

The "TEST" button on the RCD is for manual mechanical testing only - you do not press this when carrying out the X1 and X5 tests with your meter.
