I was about 17/18 working on a housing contract with an Electrician, the year? about 1965.
During that time it was permissible to drop cables down the cavities on new houses, this was a high spec site 4/5 bed detached houses.
The carpentry contract was let to a gang of Brothers from Bristol, a hard bunch, about 6 of them, anyway the Spark I was working with was a bit of a lad himself. I got on well with him, he was always OK with me, used to give me a lift to site on his M/C combo,
Well we had dropped a couple of cables down to a socket and one of these Bristolian chippies needed to replace one of the joists which our cables were clipped to, " can you move your cable mate? I need to put a new joist in" OK says my mate, "don't worry I'll drop them down the cavity when I'm done, OK you would think, not a chance, when we came back the cables were left hanging, chippie gone, my mate went ape caught hold of the chippie, beat him all over the house, told me to pack his tools up, and fox trot Oscared leaving me to face 5 hard as nails chippies I think they realised I had nothing to do with it, put a contract out on my mate, he was never seen again, don't know what happened to him, saw him about 10 years later, not a word was spoken.

Can you still remember the feeling of the air flowing through your hair Pete? Id love to beat a few dryliners to a pulp.
No but I could feel the hot air emanating from my backside as the 5 of the brothers came looking for payback

Working at a car factory, I had the stupidity of remonstrating with a burley scaffolder, who was using my installed metal trunking as a walk way. He pinned me to the wall, and told the unruly teenager where to go. After a while, we became good chums on site. When he found out, a private customer of mine had ripped me off, he offered to take a 'contract' out on him, to get my money back. Didn't take up the offer

Not scared, but certainly a "wake-up"...many years ago,i was called to do some repairs on a large mobile crane, somewhere on the large expanse of dereliction, which was Bromborough docks.

Turned up in an old petrol Mk3 Escort van,got on site, flying all over, cannot find this plant anywhere...getting bored of going back and forth on the featureless concrete expanse...didn't see the stumps of a removed barrier, separating the yard i was driving on,from the one beyond,5 feet lower...

It flew through the air like the General Lee,but landed very, very heavily, and NEVER looked or drove the same, again.

I had to walk back, and actually touch the take-off ramp,to believe it happened...

The manager said i could have the next new van,as i had not whinged about the state of it,and i got a lovely shiny "E" reg Maestro diesel van, with a fancy Prisma engine...OOOoooh!

...Drove a V10 Toureg the other week, and had to re-assess what we thought a "sharp" oiler was...:)
