Discuss Seperate circuit passing through light. in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net

It isn't specific but I would guess it applies to the lighting circuit passing through the fitting.

I mean i know its not ideal given the fact that if the fitting needs to ever be changed then both circuits would need to be isolated and the cable pulled back but is there anything saying i cant do it?

We are rewiring a stair lighting circuit and the door entry supply passes through one of our light fittings which is a seperate circuit from the lights.

Is this ok if it is marked up at the DB?
When you say "passes through one of our lighting circuits" what exactly do you mean, is the supply to the supplied from the lighting circuit?

Does that reg relate to a circuit other than the lighting one passing through though?
No I don't think it does, It's bad practice to run another circuit thorough an accessory, (Not sure which regulation refers to that) I think the Reg Westy is referring to relates to cables of the same circuit running through an existing lighting fitting will require the application of heat resistant sleeving.

think \op meands that he has a light fitting with anothe circuit passing through it. not ideal, a bit like having a weeiners lager close to my real ale /.,mkj

The Reg is not specific and as the OP says it is not ideal but the situation is there and the wiring should comply with this Reg. Aside from that I would fit notices at the fitting.

I think some lighting manufacturers do not allow through wiring of any kind in some fittings.

As for this situation it is not ideal and I would label at the fitting.

James

As long as your rewiring is compliant you can make a comment on the existing system and fit suitable warning notices.

Light fittings are not generally designed as a wiring containment system the only exception that I have come across is that manufactured by Courtney Pope Lighting that was a T12 continues fluorescent luminaire that was installed in a lot of supermarkets and had a wire way inside.
